"A valuable addition to the ongoing debate regarding the integration of young people into the labour market - this is especially crucial when considering the backdrop of the effects of the global economic and social crisis". This is how MEP David Casa described the Turunen report on youth access to the labour market.
The Turunen Report was adopted last week by the Committee of Employment and Social Affairs and will be tabled to the plenary next week.
The Report calls on the Commission and the member states to adopt a rights-based approach to employment when it comes to younger generations. There should be a focus on the quality of work that is generated and core labour standards such as minimum wage, social security and working time should be given due attention.
"The current statistics regarding early school leavers is a growing concern in the EU. This Report calls for the intensification of efforts to reach ambitious targets in this area. Such measures will not only ensure that young people find jobs but that these jobs are of good quality. These measures will enable individuals to build an economically independent adult life," stated Mr Casa.
According to the Report these objectives can be achieved through the introduction of meansures such as the lowering of the number of students in class as well as establishing a system of immediate follow-up of early school leavers.
Mr Casa congratulated the Rapporteur MEP Emilie Turunen for her excellent work.
